Last weekend, I experienced what I can honestly say was the greatest concert I have ever attended. Watching Usher Raymond and Chris Brown perform was unforgettable. The music, the choreography, the lights, the energy, the vocals, the precision, it was entertainment at its absolute finest.
But somewhere between dancing, singing every song at the top of my lungs, and cheering with thousands of other fans, something unexpected happened. I wasn't just watching a concert. I was watching purpose in motion.
There were two versions of me in that audience. One version was simply a fan. She was completely immersed in the music, smiling from ear to ear, dancing without a care, reliving memories attached to songs that have become the soundtrack to different seasons of life. The other version of me was quietly observing. She wasn't just seeing the performance. She was studying it.
I found myself watching the transitions, the choreography, the timing, the pivots, the stage design, the endurance, the confidence, and the effortless way both artists moved from one moment to the next. And then it hit me. What looked effortless wasn't effortless at all.
It was discipline.
It was preparation.
It was countless rehearsals.
It was commitment.
It was showing up long before anyone ever applauded.
People often say someone is "naturally gifted," but greatness rarely happens naturally. Greatness is built in the moments no one sees. It is choosing to improve when no one is watching. It is becoming better than the person you were yesterday.
As I watched them perform, I realized something else.
No one had to convince them to love what they do. You could see it. You could feel it.
Their passion reached every seat in the arena because people don't just connect with talent they connect with authenticity. Fans believe in their artistry because Usher and Chris Brown believed in themselves first.
That realization made me pause and ask myself a difficult question.
Have I been making excuses for why I haven't fully embraced the things that light me up?
Because if I'm honest, I know something to be true.
The happiest seasons of my life have always been the seasons where I was growing. Progress creates joy. Learning creates confidence. Purpose creates momentum.
Watching those two incredible performers reminded me that fulfillment isn't found in waiting for the perfect moment. It's found in deciding to become excellent at what you already know you love.
It reminded me that I don't need permission to become great. I simply need commitment. So, I made a promise to myself. For the next year, I will intentionally pursue what lights me up.
Here are the three commitments I'm making to myself:
1. Learn something new every month that genuinely excites me. Curiosity keeps us growing. Growth keeps us alive.
2. Dedicate myself to mastering it. Read the books. Take the courses. Practice consistently. Apply what I learn instead of simply collecting information.
3. Track my progress. Celebrate the wins. Learn from the setbacks. Measure the growth. Become better than I was yesterday.
The concert ended, but the lesson stayed with me.
We often admire people's success without appreciating the thousands of hours that created it. What we call effortless is usually the result of extraordinary effort.
This Thoughtful Thursday, I encourage you to ask yourself:
What lights you up so much that you would gladly put in the work, even if no one was watching?
Because that just might be where your purpose is waiting.
Here's to becoming students of our own potential.
Affirmation: I choose progress over perfection. I honor my gifts by committing to them daily. Every small step I take today is preparing me for the life I am becoming. Everything starts with self.
You deserve small daily rituals that remind you who you are.
