Learn Yourself Before You Love Yourself

We hear it everywhere:

Love yourself.

Love yourself enough to walk away.

Love yourself enough to set boundaries.

Love yourself enough to stop settling.

Love yourself enough to choose peace.

And yes… I believe in all of it.

But lately, I’ve been sitting with a deeper question:

Before you can fully love yourself, have you taken the time to learn yourself?

Because how can you truly love someone you don’t really know?

A question that brought me full circle.

A few years ago, I created a collection of bangle bracelets with three words:

L.U.V.  Listen. Understand. Value yourself.

At the time, I knew they mattered.

Now I understand they were teaching me something I was still becoming.

Listen to yourself.

Not just your thoughts, but your emotions.

Listen when something feels off.

Listen when your spirit is unsettled.

Listen when you say “I’m okay,” but you’re not.

Listen to the boundaries you keep ignoring.

We often silence ourselves until silence feels normal.

But learning yourself begins with listening.

Understand yourself.

Your triggers. Your patterns. Your needs.

Your fears, desires, strengths, and wounds.

Understand why you shut down, over give, withdraw, or react.

Self-awareness can be uncomfortable because it requires honesty with yourself.

But you cannot change what you refuse to see.

And you cannot build healthy relationships without understanding your relationship with you.

Then… value yourself.

Not because others affirm you.

Not because you’re chosen.

Not because you’re needed.

But because you’ve learned your worth was never up for negotiation.

And this is where self-love deepens.

Because sometimes we say we love ourselves while still repeating patterns that hurt us.

We want peace, but entertain chaos.

We want boundaries, but abandon them out of fear.

We call it “being nice,” but it’s often people-pleasing.

That’s not judgment.

It’s awareness.

Learn yourself.

Learn what makes you feel safe.

Learn what makes you feel unseen.

Learn how you respond when you’re hurt.

Learn what you need instead of expecting others to guess.

Learn the difference between loneliness and solitude.

Between forgiveness and reconciliation.

Between compassion and self-abandonment.

Because emotional maturity isn’t about avoiding feelings, it’s about not being controlled by them.

And maybe that’s why this feels full circle.

Those bracelets were always pointing me here:

Listen. Understand. Value yourself. Learn yourself.

Because the more you learn yourself, the more intentional your love becomes.

You stop asking, “Do they love me?”

And start asking, “Does this align with what I know about myself?”

You stop trying to prove your worth.

And realize you were never meant to convince anyone of it.

That’s a different kind of self-love. A deeper kind.

A grounded kind.

It shows up in your choices.

In your boundaries.

In what you tolerate, and what you no longer do.

So, this Thoughtful Thursday, I’m not just asking you to love yourself.

I’m inviting you to learn yourself.

Sit with yourself.

Listen. Understand. Be curious.

And then…

Value yourself enough to honor what you discover.

Because the greatest love story doesn’t begin with someone else.

It begins with you becoming deeply acquainted with the woman in the mirror.

And maybe that’s where self-love truly begins: not in perfection, but in knowing.

Listen. Learn. Understand. Value. Love.

That’s the L.U.V. I’m choosing today.

Hermonious Affirmation

I am worthy of knowing myself deeply. I listen, I learn, I understand, and I value who I am becoming. I do not abandon myself to be loved. I choose myself intentionally, consistently, and with care.

With harmony and light,
