More Than Skin Deep: The Habits That Truly Made a Difference

You know what I have learned on this skincare journey?

Sometimes the magic is not even in the products. Sometimes it is in the little habits we do every single day that make the biggest difference over time.

For years I thought skincare was all about buying the newest serum, eye cream, toner, or moisturizer. While products absolutely matter, I realized how we treat our skin maters just as much.

Let's start with washing our faces because I learned there is a right way to do it and I’m sharing what works.

When I was younger, I would scrub my face like I was trying to erase my entire day. Looking back, I cringe. Our skin is delicate and it deserves gentleness.

In my twenties and younger years, washing my face twice a day worked perfectly for morning and night. Younger skin usually produces more oil, and throughout the day our skin collects sweat, dirt, makeup, and environmental buildup.

As our skin matures, especially around 45 and beyond, our skin can become drier and lose moisture more quickly. Some women still enjoy cleansing morning and night, while others may choose a gentler rinse or hydrating cleanser in the morning and a deeper cleanse at night.

Listening to your skin becomes important because what worked at twenty may not be exactly what your skin needs at forty, fifty, sixty or eighty.

Temperature matters.

I avoid extremely hot water on my face because hot water can strip natural oils and leave skin feeling dry or irritated. I love warm or lukewarm water because it cleanses without leaving my skin feeling tight or thirsty afterward.

Now after cleansing, I never aggressively rub my face dry with a towel.

Never.

I gently pat my face and neck dry.

Patting allows the skin to remain calm and helps avoid unnecessary pulling that over time can contribute to irritation and stress on the skin. Plus, I want my products to absorb slightly damp skin because hydration is the goal.

And speaking of skincare, can we please talk about neck care?

Ladies, our neck and décolleté are part of the skincare conversation too.

I treat my neck with the same love I give my face because they age together. Everything that goes on my face usually travels down to my neck and chest.

A staple I started incorporating is dry brushing and guasha into my self-care routine.

Dry brushing has become one of those quiet luxuries I genuinely enjoy because it can:

• Help gently exfoliate dead skin• Support circulation• Leave skin feeling smoother• Encourage a healthy glow• Create a relaxing self-care ritual

I also enjoy using guasha on my face, neck, and décolleté area because it feels like giving my skin a little love language of its own.

I use gentle upward motions and love how it helps me slow down and reconnect with myself. Beyond skincare, it becomes a moment of peace.

And speaking of clean skin, let us have a real conversation about makeup brushes.

Clean faces and dirty makeup brushes defeat all the work and effort we put into our skincare routines and that is how we spell disaster.

Makeup brushes collect:

• Oils from our skin• Makeup buildup• Dead skin cells• Dirt• Bacteria

All of that eventually goes right back onto our fresh, clean faces.

No ma'am.

I make it a point to clean my brushes regularly because if I am spending time cleansing, toning, moisturizing, masking, and protecting my skin, I am not allowing dirty brushes to sabotage my glow.

And while skincare usually gets all the attention, healthy skin is truly about overall body care too.

Healthy hygiene includes caring for our entire bodies, not just our faces.

Showering regularly, moisturizing the skin from head to toe, exfoliating when needed, staying active, resting, and drinking enough water all become pieces of the same puzzle.

Because beautiful skin is not created from an expensive product.

Beautiful skin is built through consistency.

It is built through care.

It is built through love.

Most importantly, it is built through hydration.

As our skin matures, hydration becomes essential. Trust me on this one, my Hermonious loves your future skin will thank you for this simple yet powerful reminder.

Speaking of hydration…

Stay hydrated because hydration is one of the greatest gifts we can give our skin. Water supports elasticity, helps skin appear fuller and healthier, and contributes to that beautiful glow we are all after.

Sometimes the glow is not found in another product sitting on the shelf. Sometimes it begins with the simple act of nourishing ourselves from within.
