Sensory Hygiene: We Are Saying Yes

I recently discovered something truly beautiful and honest, transformative called Sensory Hygiene. Maybe you’ve heard of it already, or maybe this will be your first introduction (like it was for me). Either way, I just had to share because this gentle practice has been helping me regulate my nervous system, reconnect with my body, and prioritize my peace in ways I didn’t know I needed.

Sensory hygiene is all about tending to your five senses with intention cleaning up what you take in through sound, smell, touch, sight, and taste. It’s like self-care for your sensory world. And let me tell you, it’s been such a loving reset for my energy, my mood, and my emotional clarity.

Here are a few ways I’ve been practicing it lately:

Hearing:

When I want to feel calm, I play music that soothes me soft spa sounds, gentle jazz, ambient piano. I cancel out the chaos of the world around me and tune in to stillness. The right sound can wrap me up like a soft blanket and remind me to breathe slower, deeper.

Smell:

Aromatherapy is my emotional anchor. The moment I inhale lemongrass or lavender, I feel like I’ve exhaled the entire day. My body remembers peace. My spirit softens. These scents bring me into balance, grounding me in the now.

Touch:

Give me a plush, cozy blanket and I will melt into the moment. At the end of the day or especially the end of the week, I let myself be held by softness. Texture matters more than I realized. It tells my nervous system, I am safe here.

Sensory Self-Care:

Sometimes I combine these practices. For example: after a warm bath, I might use lemongrass oil paired with another favorite, massaging it into my skin slowly while soft music plays in the background. It’s so simple… yet incredibly nurturing. In that moment, I’m fully present. Mindful. Relaxed. Alive.

I don’t always use all the senses at once, sometimes just one or two is enough—but the impact is undeniable. Each small, sensual choice reminds me that I deserve to feel good, to feel loved by me.

Why It Matters:

Practicing sensory hygiene has taught me that nurturing myself through the senses is an act of radical self-love. It fosters presence. It anchors pleasure. It calms the chaos. And it reminds me that I’m worthy of tenderness, softness, and care every single day.

With everything going on in the world right now, I believe we all need more of this. A gentle return to our bodies. A break from the noise. A moment of joy through the senses.

Your Turn:

I encourage you to explore what Sensory Hygiene looks like to you. Start with one sense. Maybe it’s lighting a candle that smells like summer. Or listening to music that feels like a warm hug. Try it once a week or every day if you can.

I promise, your body, mind, and soul will thank you.

And as always, I’m here to remind you:

You are worthy of prioritizing yourself.

You are allowed to feel good.

And your peace matters.

Whether it’s a calming playlist, a scented oil, or a cozy texture your body is always inviting you back to presence. Listen to her. She knows what she needs.
