Booked, Busy, and Burnt Out: The Illusion of the Hustle

Lately, I’ve been reflecting on the “booked and busy” mentality that seems to define our era. Somewhere along the way, relentless ambition and a never-ending schedule became badges of honor. It’s not just the entrepreneurs running on caffeine and deadlines, it’s all of us.
Social media has glamorized this lifestyle. Perfectly curated posts, airport selfies, business meetings, gym check-ins, family outings, it’s a highlight reel of constant motion. We scroll and subconsciously internalize it as success. But what we rarely see are the quiet tears of exhaustion, the nights of restless sleep, and the silent craving for stillness.
The truth is there’s another kind of “booked and busy” that doesn’t make the timeline. It’s the woman juggling her 9–5 (or not-so-9–5), the school drop-offs, the grocery lists, the dinner prep, the partner’s schedule, the family dog, the gym, and a sprinkle of social life when she can squeeze it in. That version of booked and busy is not glamorous—it’s survival.
And when someone says, “She was always there for everyone,” I no longer hear it as a compliment. Because being everything to everyone often means being nothing to yourself. It means being tired, overwhelmed, and running on fumes while wearing a smile that hides it all.
People love to glorify the hustle. But the pace of hustle is an illusion. If we’re always grinding, where is our peace? Where is our joy? Where is the alignment? The body keeps score, and eventually, it will speak through sleep disturbances, fatigue, anxiety, or burnout. A full schedule doesn’t always mean a fulfilled life.
I’m learning that stillness is not laziness, it’s self-preservation. Balance isn’t found in doing more; it’s found in doing what matters.
With harmony and light,
